MTC sign up to Ban the Box campaign

MTC has signed up to the Ban the Box campaign run by Business in the Community (BITC). This campaign calls on UK employers to give people with criminal convictions a fair chance to compete for jobs by removing ‘tick boxes’ and asking about past criminal convictions at a later stage in the recruitment process.

Learning through lived experience

MTC’s purpose is to transform lives by unlocking potential. One of our three social missions is to learn through lived experience and we want to recognise people’s full potential, reduce economic and social inequality and attract a diverse range of people to work with us.

Signing up to the Ban the Box campaign ensures we attract individuals who have personal direct experience with the criminal justice system, helping those individuals transform their own lives and the lives of those they work with.

With over 11.9 million people in the UK having a criminal record, we’re opening up the pool of talent vastly, committing to looking at people’s skills and abilities first – not their convictions.

What we’re going to do

As part of our pledge to signing up to Ban the Box, we will be removing questions in our application process which ask candidates about their criminal convictions.

We’ll be updating policies and procedures to reflect our new approach as well as providing guidance and training for hiring managers (in addition to Unconscious Bias training) to ensure our new mindset is consistent across interviews and risk assessments.

We are committing to reviewing each candidate application on a case-by-case basis, examining only the skills and experience relevant for the role.

Making a real difference

Signing up to Ban the Box allows MTC to further embed our social mission of learning through lived experience, ensuring we’re offering better opportunities to those who have experienced social or economic disadvantages in their lives.

We’re also removing a barrier and encouraging candidates with all ranges of life experience to apply for roles with MTC, in addition to our previous commitment made to being a Disability Confident employer.
